Feedback from class on contents page

From this feedback, i will edit the title and make it more eye catching as i agree that it doesn't stand out as much as it could.

Double page spread - How it meets the audience needs and how i designed it

My double page spread meets the audience needs as it is all very clear and understandable and set out in a professional way. I have kept the red colour scheme yet again throughout this as well. By using red text for the questions in the interview and the pull quote on the right hand side page. I also made sure to use alternative fonts to make it look interesting and worth reading. Also by having spaces between each question and answer makes it look like less to read which will intrigue more people to want to read it. Yet again, on the main image has still got that pink tint which relates to the primary audience as pink is associated with females. Also the colour red isn't associated with either particular gender, so this will work with my primary and secondary audiences.

I created the effect of the images being a mirror image by swapping the way it is facing and matching the images up in the crease of the double pages. Also i put both the opening and ending paragraphs in lucida handwriting font, making it look posh and keeping them both relatively the same as they do the same thing but different. I alternated the fonts all over the double pages to keep it interesting all the way through and to keep the audience interested. Also i made sure to make the red pull quote the most eye catching as this is what will intrigue the audience to want to read more about the article. Keeping the logo again near the bottom of the page, indicating the magazine is unique and that is how it will be known. I filled in the space on the right hand page at the bottom, by adding ways to follow the duo through social networking sites. These logos are also known all over the world and mostly by teenagers and will surly attract attention as people will want to know what they can find out within the internet. Also as i added the black arrow with 'this week' inside of it, also will be on each page. I kept 'The gogos go for it' in more of a posh font to create a formal effect and i also made it bigger than any other text which made it eye catching. Also as its places across the width of the page as the article is set in columns also makes it stand out that bit more as it isn't the same as the rest of the page.  Also keeping the strip lines the same pattern and colour creates originality and keeps the page intact between both sides.

Contents page - How it meets the audience needs and how i designed it

My contents page meets the audience' needs as it has enough information for the audience to clear see what is inside of the magazine. Also as i added in a few choices of images down the side to relate to the information of the page closest to it. To make it more understandable i added numbers of the pages onto the side of each image. Also the continuous use of the dark red and white text on the dark background keeps it very clear and all the text stands out. Choosing the most effective colours was important as the audience needs to be able to clearly see and read the text.

Firstly, the image i choose for the contents page involves a lot more eye contact from the models which can make it feel more personal to the audience. Also i kept the pink tint, which relates to the primary audience of teenage females. With the masthead i chose to make the shape of the text drop down in the middle of the word, as the image mainly to each side of the page. Also i made sure to  keep the issue date and the magazine logo present on the page to make it more unique. I thought by doing this will make the magazines logo and colour scheme well known and when it is seen people will know the name automatically.
More over, i added a grey bar and changed the opacity making sure the background image was still visible through it. In this i added the page numbers and the title and information of the main article. As it being in this different coloured bar, it made it look like the most important part of information on the full page. However, underneath this i added white lines to put each section of the contents into different columns, separating the text making it a lot more clear to read.  I made to smaller boxes to put in the names of each column, making it noticeable what each one is. Another thing i chose to do was add images that related to a few of the page titles. Some of the images didn't match up correctly which made it a bit confusing, so i decided to add the specific page number of the title on the certain image, making it a lot more clear to the audience. By making the small section of the information about each page title red, created contrast against the white titles, especially against the black background.

Improvements to double page spread

After i got more feedback from my teacher, i made some more improvements to my double page spread. Firstly i moved 'the gogos go for it' from the left hand page, up to the top of the right hand page as i thought the pull quote on the left was enough to attract the audiences attention. Moving this made the right hand page look more like it had an important title to it and looked a lot more eye catching to the article. Also instead of having a small paragraph briefly explaining the interview, i changed it into having a big paragraph over the length of the top of the page before the article starts. In the paragraph i also added more detail about the band, giving more of a clear understanding about who the article is about before it's being read. By doing this, meant i had to make the font smaller Another thing i changed was the colour of the questions being asked in the article. I changed the colour from black to a dark red which has been used throughout the other pages of the magazine. This also makes the questions stand out more and the parts of important information in the last ending paragraph to conclude  the full article. I think the changed i have made have made big improvements and is close to being my final version.

Changes made to contents page

I made more changes to my contents page. Firstly i replaced the bullet points for lines, separating the two sections and titles. I thought this looked more eye catching and made the text not look so close together. I also added my magazine logo and the issue number in the top two corners, making it more unique. Also on the images down the side, i added which page number they relate too, making it a lot more understandable which picture goes with which piece of text. Another thing i changed was, i added more text about the 'new pop duo' to fill in the rest of the bar and give the audience more information. The changes i made are effective and add more interest to the page.

Front page - How it meets the audience needs and how I designed it

My front page meets the audience needs as all the text differs and looks interesting. Also the use of different colours to create more emphasis on different parts of text so they stand out. Further more, the choice of sticking to red, white and black colours, which all stand out on which ever one is the background at the time. The information meets the audience' needs as the puffs are clearly understandable and entice the audience to want to buy the magazine and read the articles which are advertised on the front cover. The main image also meets the audience' needs as the poses the models are doing are more directed to females as of the fashion, make up etc. Also by having one of the models using direct eye contact with the audience, it makes it more likely for it to draw the audiences attention to read the font cover. By using different selection of text font, colour and size makes it a lot more interesting to look at meaning that it's more likely to be read. Also making the issue number, date and price big enough for the audience to clearly find and understand as this needs to be seen to inform the audience about this information.

I designed it by taking the front cover image and placing the masthead over the top as it shows that the models in the image are a big part of the magazine. I made sure not to cover the faces of the models. I kept the puffs to each side of the image and placed a pull quote from the main article inside the magazine nearer the centre as it's the main part of information. More over, i choose the most interesting pull quote from the article, as it would make the audience want to read about what the quote is about, proving it must be important if it's the biggest puff on the page. I also placed some of the text into a box, to make it different to every other bit of text that is just placed simply onto the page. In the box i then again changed the font throughout the piece of text. I choose to make the main part bigger and more eye catching, that part being 'same love'. Also by keeping the same house style throughout, keeping it looking professional and organised, as it wouldn't appeal to people if the page looked too busy and messy so it wasn't understandable.

Changes to contents page

The things that i changed in this version are as follows. Firstly i put the titles 'features' and 'news' into boxes instead of being underlined, making it stand out a lot more than before. Another thing i changed was the colour of the text underneath the page titles, which give a brief explanation of what that page is about, also changing it to red made it a lot more clear to read. Having this text a different colour to the page titles make it a lot more clear which part is which and is more understandable. I also added images down the right hand side, relating to the text closest to it to make it look more interesting and appealing to the target audience.

Changes to double page spread after feedback

After the feedback i got from my class mates i took one of the problems into consideration. I filled in the gap underneath the pull quote on the left hand side. I filled it in with two logos, one which is Facebook and the other one Twitter. I then put in text of where to follow the duo on their journey to fame. I didn't change the font of the pull quote on the right hand side as i like it being a different font to any other on the page which makes it stand out a lot more and as it's a different colour, it intrigues the audience to want to read the article. I also made the text smaller in the article and spaced it out more to get more of a gap around the pull quote to give it it's own room. I also lined up the mirror image of the background's as that was pointed out that it wasn't aligned correctly.

Second draft of contents page

This is my second draft of my contents page. This version is a lot more packed with different pages and more information which is very helpful for the audience. I kept the font in an easy to read font and kept it white so it clearly stands out on the background. This doesn't look like the stereotypical contents page you'd usually see, as its only set in two neat columns with a more important bar above them. The representation is a lot better in this version, as the main image isn't the first thing you see, the text is which is the main point to having the page. This also appeals to my primary audience as the main image       is carrying on the pink tint from the front cover. As pink appeals more to females than males. One of the things i changed was removing the 'features' below the masthead and moved it onto the top of the features column i created. I also made another column with the title 'news' to separate the different content in the magazine so it's easier to locate specific pages. As of these changes, i think my contents page looks a lot more professional and appealing to the audience.

advice from class on double page spread

praise i appreciate - good effects on the images
Ill consider - filling the space under quote on left page
While looking at other peoples work, id think about using a wider range of fonts
Things i admire - id change the layout to a more simple one

First draft of contents page

This is the first draft of my contents page. I have used the same colour scheme as the double page spread and the front page. I made sure i kept the masthead black with a red outline. I used white for the rest of the text on the page as it stands out the most on the mainly black background. I also chose this image as the models are making eye contact with the camera making it feel more personal to the audience. The image isn't to eye catching, as the text is the main part of the page, informing the audience what to expect inside of the magazine. I also put each headline next to a bullet point, making it look more spread out and easy to understand. I added a grey bar in the middle and changed the opacity so it was able to still see the image through it. Then i added the headline and page numbers for the pages that will include the main article about 'The Gogos' and this made this part stand out the most on the full page. I also added 'features' under the masthead of the page as it notifies the reader that the text is what is featuring in the magazine and is also the first thing they will see.

second draft of double page spread

This is my second version of my double page spread. The changes i made are, firstly i removed the text in the masthead and created the title in the pull quote on the left hand side instead, and moved both the title and pull quote central as it seemed more eye catching. Then i changed the font, and font size of the pull quote on the right hand side, making it stand out more than the actual interview. I also changed the font of the article, making it more understandable and giving the pull quote more space surrounding it. Another i done was make the gaps on sides and down the middle of the text larger, making the text easier to read and understand. Also i made the questions larger and more bold than the answers. I also removed the three traffic light colours circles in the bottom right corner, as i thought it looked more appealing without them there and i also removed them off the front page to make it look the same. As i changed the font type and size, it meant there was enough room for another question in the article, which made the page look more filled and had more information.

Changes made to front cover next draft

This is my third draft of my front cover, using feedback from my teacher. The first change i made was, changing the shape of the box in the bottom left hand corner giving it a stronger look to the audience. I also changed the font inside the box, making it different to any other font iv used on the front cover which makes the cover look more interesting. I also made the text 'same love' larger, making it stand out as it's the main focus of the article that puff is about. Another change i made was removing the five red circles at the bottom of the page, as i thought it looked better and had a more professional look without them and they weren't needed. I also moved the pull quote further up, as this made it more of a eye level area which means the audience will more than likely be drawn to this text first. I think the brand identity is the red white and black colour scheme, as it will carry on throughout the magazine. Also the choice of fonts and no other magazine will have all of the some font types.

First draft of double page spread

This is my first draft of my double page spread. I have used the same font for the pull quote on the left and right hand side, and the title in the masthead, making it all relate. I also kept all the text on the first page to the right as i thought it looked more sophisticated in that form. I chose i small, plain font for the actual interview, so it was easy to read and understand. I also kept the questions and answers the same size, which i would consider changing, as it isn't very eye catching. Another thing i done was used to the three traffic light coloured circles, as i used them on on the front cover as well. Further more, i put a black arrow at the top right hand corner with 'this week' in the centre of it, showing that the article is off that particular week.
With the image choice i alined two of the same image on each page, but making it look like a mirror image. Then i made the image on the right hand side more opaque, so it was able to still see the article and the mirrored images just slightly showing underneath.

second draft of front cover

This is my second draft of my front page in my magazine. I made the masthead more bold and eye catching by adding a glow around the outside of each letter.  I have changed the colour of the strip line at the top of the page, advertising bands shown in the magazine, to red, to make the text stand out more to the audience. I also removed the red circles from the right hand side and made the price of the magazine bigger as it's the most important part to the audience. Another thing i changed is the size and font of 'THE GOGOS'. This made it stand out a lot more showing who the models are on the front page as they're the main focus inside on the double page spread. Further more, i changed 'win a range of apple products, to 'one directions exclusive interview. This heading is much more relating to music and the magazine, also the font is a lot more interesting and different from others on the page. As well as this, i removed the images of the apple products as they didn't apply no more to the knew sub heading. I then made the box underneath bigger and changed the text inside, to something more interesting to what is to see inside the magazine. I also made 'same love' in a different font and colours of the gay pride flag as it stands out and relates to the song also.

Images i have used

What i have learnt from analysing double page spreads

From analysing double page spreads, i have learnt a lot about the layout and how important it is about where to place things. Making the main image the size of one whole side making sure its clear to the reader who the article is about before they start reading it. Also using parts of bigger, bolder parts of text to show which parts show mostly what the article is about or what is the most shocking or interesting part throughout. Also the way the article is laid out is very important as this is what the reader is wanting to read. Having the text in columns rather than big paragraphs, will make it look like there is less text and more likely for the audience to read it. Moreover, using big, eye catching mastheads on the main page of the article, draws in a lot of attention from the audience as it clearly shows who and what the text is about. Its very important for double page spreads to look the most eye catching and the most interesting, as this is what the front cover of the magazine is usually focusing the advertisement on. With the article bring spread over two pages, automatically tells the audience that it is important, as it's been put there as the company find it interesting and think that the primary audience will like to read that specific article.

teachers advice

I have taken most of this advice into consideration. This has helped make my front cover a lot better as i ran out of ideas and needed someone else's opinion. I agree with all of the advice given and i have attempted to make the changes and make the front cover look more professional and to the best it can be.

peer assessment from class

This also helped with my front cover a lot as i needed more of other peoples opinions, as if they were the ones looking to buy it. I disagreed with some of the advice but i chose parts where i could make improvement. I look on the advice of the price being bigger and changed the strip line colour. I also got ideas of my own from looking at other peoples work.

Font choices

music magazine front page

This is my first draft of my front cover. I have chosen simple text in the stripline
, which is showing what the features are in the magazine which is quite important. For my masthead, i have used i rounded black text with a thick red outline to make it stand out more and setting the house style of the page. I used mainly around the same fonts all across the page. I used the same font for the first puff on the left hand side and the right hand side, both being highlighted black making them stand out more on the background. I then used a different font for the puff's in the red font. In the box at the bottom i chose to use a more fancy font for the word 'exclusive' as that's the word which would intrigue the audience to want to read about it. For the big pull quote, i used another very simple font, with a more fancy font for the word 'never' putting emphasis on it. Also by making it red it made it look a lot more stronger about the meaning. I also put 'more on page 6-7' underneath the pull quote as this presents which pages the viewer would find that certain article on.  I placed five red circle at the bottom and at the top left, as there was space and i thought it would look good with the red house style and that i could carry it on throughout the other pages. I also done the same with three circles but in the colours of traffic lights and under the name of the new duo, as it indications moving along. The font i chose for 'THE GOGOS' is different to any other font on the page which makes it stand out a lot more and that the main article inside the magazine is about them.

Flat plan of double page spread

I have chosen this layout because, the first place the reader will look is on the left hand side, so i will have the most interesting pull quote on that page to entice the reader to want to read the full article. Also i will keep the strip lines on and the same colours as i'd like the magazine to follow the scheme. Keeping the article in columns will make it look more readable as its neatly inline. Also having the more transparent image behind the article will mean that it won't look so boring and uninteresting.

What i have learnt from analysing front covers

From the three music magazine front covers i analysed it gave me a lot of ideas about how to create my own. It learnt me things about which colours stand out the most and where the best place to put pull quotes and pugs is to make sure they are the most eye catching as possible to get the primary audience.
I also got ideas of how to set things out, so it didn't look like there was to much going on and it just looked like there was enough information on the page, to draw in the audience to whats inside. Also making sure to get the most important inside information, in short term on the front. Making sure to use the most interesting pull quote from an inside article and making it stand out the most over most other text.
I also learnt to try and keep the colour scheme the same, to make it look more professional and make it easier to read and understand, as it could look like theres to much going on and could come across as being confusing which would lose buyers.
Picking apart other magazines helped a lot on creating my own.
Another thing i realised was that its important how the models are posing and how they're dressed, to send across the correct message. Making sure that all the text on the front cover is set around what genre the magazine is set around, strongly making sure the audience is aware that it is about pop music and only using famous icons that are famous in that certain industry. As it wouldn't sell if one issue was with pop music then all of a sudden started featuring rock music, this would lose buyers and attract the wrong audience. Making sure the price, issue number and the date issued is clearly shown as its one of the most important parts of information for the audience.

Front page analysis

The main colours on my front page are red, white and black. I've chosen these colours because they all stand out and the black and white has a lot of contrast. The stronger, more important text i have put in red and a selection of a few words in italic to make them a bit more eye catching. The text I've chosen to make the biggest is the pull quote which i put in white text, with the word 'never' in red and made it italic as it's the word with the strongest meaning in the quote. I also changed the title from 'BeatzUK' to 'LOUD!' as i thought this was more relevant. I have made the title black with a thick red outline as it matches the colour scheme and also stands out very well. I chose the background to be black as most colours stand out when they're layered on this, and i found it worked very well.
The lighting in my main image is very bright and has a tint of pink to show that the primary target audience is more for females rather than males. The brightness of the image also makes it more eye catching as iv put it on a black background. I have also made the title cover the image, to clarify that the people on the image have a lot to do with the magazine and the main article inside will be about them. One of the models is also making eye direct eye contact with the camera, making it look more personal and draws attention of audiences.
I have also added a banner at the top of the page, to draw in attention as it notifies the reader of what kind of things they will find throughout the magazine. I made the banner a very light red colour so it still sticks to the colour scheme but doesn't stand out to much that the attention is brought from the other areas of text. I also kept the text in the banner white as i thought it still stood out enough and it blended well together.
I have placed the issue number, the date of release and the price of the magazine in the top right hand corner next to the masthead as this is where the viewer will first look and the price is one of the most important section of text to the audience.
I also put the pugs and puffs into different shaped boxes with black backgrounds but i changed the how transparent they were and made them so it was still able to see the main image through them. I used a thick white boarder on each shape. More over, i added two groups of five red circles, one on the right hand side and one at the bottom of the page. I again changed how transparent they were so its able to see them overlapping, i chose to put these on as it filled up the space nicely and looked neat and professional. The red also matched with the other sections on the cover.

Questionnaire analysis

The results from my questionnaire show that the more popular gender is female, within the age group of 16-19 year olds, which is D in the audience code. My secondary audience will be males aged 16-19 and people outside the age range. The magazine will meet female needs by being brightly coloured and looks more feminine. Also the fashion side would be jump out to the female audience, with the choices of the image on the front cover. The images will also have a feminine feel from them.

The most popular genre of music showed out to be pop, which is the genre my magazine will be aimed around. Pop music appeals to most people and is the most known about genre as its played everywhere. To make it more noticeable that it is a pop genre magazine i will use models from the pop music industry on the front page which will straight away show that some of the content will be around them and pop. I will also use advertsiments pugs, about new pop music, albums or any news. The answers from the favourite band or artist question also gave me ideas about which people in the pop music industry are the most popular at this moment in time, to make sure the magazine is the most up to date it can be and it has the most appealing image on the front to draw attention of the audience. Also which artists or genres should not be in the magazine and will turn away buyers.

Also the content inside the magazine will need to stay more feminine than masculine. I will have to focus on pop music and fashion, things that females are interested in. There will also be some more masculine areas inside for the secondary audience, making sure it satisfies both primary and secondary target audiences.

Layout of a magazine

Content of a magazine front cover

magazine preparation task edit

reasons for the images i took for my magazine

I took these images in my photography lecture in a low key photography studio.

I have chosen this image for my contents page as the content of the magazine's pages will not cover the faces of the two models, and also the facial expressions aren't serious which makes it fit to the target audience, of young females. This also appeals with the pink tint of light i applied to the models, to aim it to be more relatable to the female audience.

I also took this image in a photography studio during one of my lectures. The pink tint also makes the images look more for a female audience and gives it more of an effect. The facial expressions are more serious on this as iv chosen it for my double page spread which is an interview about their own lives. As of how the models are posing, it will fit well together when i flip a copy of the photograph around and use it as a mirror image. With the serious facial expressions it gives the impression of a serious article that it relates to.
I also took this image in a photography studio in one of my lectures. Both models are posing differently, with one not looking at the camera, which is a good pose. The clothes the models are wearing aren't to girly, nor to much out of the age range of the target audience. The models i used are my college friends, w ho agreed to do this shoot with me. I also choose to do it in a studio to get the best quality images for my magazine, to make it look the best i can. Also as poor quality images can make a magazine look like   a lack of effort has been put into creating it. I will edit all of these images to make sure the backgrounds are all full black and that any implications are removed.

College magazine front page and contents page analysis

This is my college magazine, front cover and contents page.
I have chosen to use this image on my front cover as my background, as it shows one of the bede students at work on some of the facilities in the college and it shows what is available to use. I also choose to put two pull quotes on the main page to attract attention of the reader, to make them want to read more about what is in the inside. I also added the date at the bottom of the page as it will be issued every week and you can make sure if your reading the most up to date magazine or ones off a while ago if you missed an issue. I also kept the main colour blue, as it symbolises the college as the logo has blue art around it. I also made the main image more transparent so the pull quotes will stand out more to the user and draw attention. The title indicates that the magazine will be brought out once every week, after being updated with new information for the students.

On my contents page, i kept the font of the title and all the writing on the page the same to make it ook more professional to the reader. I added images down the right hand side to make the page look more appealing and worth reading. I choose images of the college and students around college enjoying and using all the facilities that offered. I also added some  in different colours on the bottom left had corner of the page, as bede college also symbolises some of the events they put online and they use this pattern as a consecutive house style.

From this process i have learnt what makes a good contents page and front page. I learnt what to add to the pages and the best places to put them to get the most detail into them. I have also learnt to make sure everything stands out and the more important parts are more eye catching to the audience. Also making sure that the images all fit to the primary audience's needs and them to be a good quality. Another thing i have learnt is to use a selection of different colours and different fonts to make the pages look more interesting and catch the attention of the audience and makes them want to read on. Also that it is important to carry on throughout the magazine with the same house style, which makes it look professional and it looks neat rather than messy, and looking like its all over.
